Leon County commissioners in Tallahassee, Florida, have voted to draft an ordinance that would ban certain derivatives of kratom. The proposal follows concerns about the products’ alleged dangers and potential for addiction, according to the information provided.

The vote concerns drafting an ordinance; the available information does not say that commissioners approved a final ban. It also does not identify which kratom derivatives could be covered, explain how the proposed restriction would be defined, or provide a schedule for preparing or considering the draft.

The concerns cited are described as allegations. No supporting studies, expert assessments, public testimony or other evidence were included in the information available, so the basis and scope of those concerns cannot be detailed here. The information also does not specify whether the proposed ordinance would apply to sales, possession, distribution or another activity.

Several details about the county’s action remain unreported. The date of the vote, the names of commissioners who supported or opposed drafting the ordinance, and the number of votes were not provided. No statements from commissioners, county staff, residents, businesses or other affected parties were included.

The next steps are also unclear. The information does not say when a draft might be completed, whether the commission has scheduled further discussion, or whether a public hearing or additional vote is planned. Until those details are available, the reported action is limited to a vote to prepare a proposed ordinance addressing certain derivatives of kratom.
