He later served as Chief Resident in both the Department of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation, and Pain Medicine, and the Department of Family Medicine at Rutgers–Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. Further advancing his expertise, Dr. Abend completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at Rutgers–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, gaining specialized experience in sports-related injuries, rehabilitation, and performance optimization. Demonstrating his ongoing commitment to clinical excellence and lifelong learning, Dr. Abend recently completed his board recertification, maintaining his certification for the next five years.

Throughout his career, Dr. Abend has been recognized for his significant contributions to medicine and patient advocacy. In 2021, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Rowan Osteopathic Medical School in recognition of his impactful work in Autism. In 2019, Drew University honored him with its Distinguished Alumni Award for his professional accomplishments and leadership in healthcare. His dedication to Autism research and care has also earned him the Jefferson Award for New Jersey State and Regional recognition, as well as the prestigious Dr. Margaret Bauman Award, presented by a Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Abend continues to play an influential role in healthcare leadership and innovation. He serves as Chairman of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Medical Director of Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation Services at RWJ Barnabas Hospital at Rahway, where he helps shape the delivery of high-quality rehabilitative care. He is also the President of Union County Surgical Center and consults with multiple private equity healthcare organizations, further demonstrating his leadership, strategic insight, and commitment to advancing modern healthcare. Most recently, Dr. Abend was appointed Medical Director of the JOGO Health Medicare Access Program, a role that further highlights his dedication to expanding access to innovative, patient-centered healthcare solutions and improving outcomes for diverse patient populations.
